Choosing an area in Nara
Around Nara Park you find four types of lodging: hotels, ryokan, business hotels and guesthouses. This guide does not recommend single properties and gives no room prices, because rates change by date and by offer. It helps you choose the area. Walking times and opening hours are those of 2026.
Three things decide the area: which station you arrive at, which sight you want first, and whether you want to be at the gate when it opens. Kintetsu Nara is close to Kofuku-ji and the western side of the park. JR Nara is farther west, 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the park. Naramachi, the old town district, lies close to both the park and Kintetsu Nara.

Areas compared
A choice by location, not a ranking of quality or price.
| Base | Suits | Walking times |

| Near Kintetsu Nara and the western park | Short walks to the main sights; arrival with Kintetsu from Kyoto or Osaka-Namba | 5 min to the Kofuku-ji hall, 15 to Isuien and the museum, 25 to Kasuga Taisha |
| Near JR Nara | Arrival with JR from Kyoto or Osaka | 15 to 20 min to the park and Kofuku-ji |
| Naramachi | Staying close to the old town streets and the park | About 20 min from Kintetsu Nara to Koshi-no-Ie |
| Kyoto or Osaka | A day trip with a base in a larger city | Kyoto about 35 to 45 min, Osaka about 40 to 50 min by train |
The two stations are different places, so check which one a lodging is closest to. The page getting to Nara Park has the walking times and bus links.

Staying in Kyoto or Osaka instead
You can also see Nara as a day trip. The train takes about 35 minutes from Kyoto on the Kintetsu limited express and about 45 minutes on the JR Miyakoji Rapid. From Osaka-Namba it takes about 40 minutes, and from Osaka on the JR Yamatoji Rapid 45 to 50 minutes. Add the walk from the station to the park.
If Kyoto is your base, the Fushimi Inari guide has a page on where to stay there. The plans are on Nara from Kyoto and Nara from Osaka. A night lets you see the park early and late.
