Pick the right station in Osaka
The direct Kintetsu train leaves from Osaka-Namba and takes about 40 minutes to Kintetsu-Nara. Osaka-Namba is the Kintetsu station. It is not the same as Nankai Namba or JR Namba, and it is not Osaka or Umeda. If you start at the wrong station, you add a transfer and walking time before you even board.
JR runs from Osaka to JR Nara on the Yamatoji Rapid in 45 to 50 minutes. JR Nara lies further west than Kintetsu-Nara, about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the park and Kofukuji. Kintetsu-Nara sits close to Kofukuji and the western side of the park, which makes it the more convenient arrival point for most visitors.

The Mahoroba limited express
A newer option that does not run every day.
JR Mahoroba runs regularly on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Some extra services run for limited periods, so it is not a daily standard train. Do not plan a weekday trip around it.
For Osaka and Shin-Osaka to Nara the special ticketless supplement is JPY 860 for adults one way. It is bought online only, with e5489 and a credit card, and there is no child version. You pay the basic fare in addition. The regular supplement in the normal season is JPY 1,730. Do not confuse these amounts with the fare of the Yamatoji Rapid, which needs no supplement.
